Hi, my name is Tony Kern! (He/Him)

I am currently a student completing my Clinical Mental Health Counselor training at Adler University in Chicago and I completed my B.A. in Behavioral Science at National Lewis University in 2022. While living in Colorado, I began working towards my Certified Addiction Counselor certification and have experience providing group based substance use counseling. I am a non-traditional adult learner whose path into higher education began later in life after completing my service in the military and earning my GED.

Who do I work with?

I have experience in providing counseling support to clients who have been impacted by trauma and who struggle with substance use disorders, as well as those who are navigating anxiety and mood disorders. As someone who has experienced addiction personally, I strive to provide a space that acknowledges both the pain of these struggles and the possibility of hope, change, and empowerment. Additionally, I am also passionate about providing care to individuals who have been previously incarcerated and are working towards reintegration through higher levels of education. I understand how difficult it can be to separate from an identity that society often defines narrowly and to overcome the stigma and systemic obstacles that come with it.

While I am not a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community myself, I hold deep respect and care for the community, shaped in part by the many 2SLGBTQ+ friends and family members who have been an important part of my life. As a straight, cisgender man, I recognize the privilege that comes with my identity, and I strive to use that awareness to foster an affirming, inclusive, and respectful space for all 2SLGBTQ+ clients. My ongoing commitment is to continue learning, growing, and showing up as an ally both in and outside of the counseling room.

What approaches do I utilize?

My counseling approach is eclectic and client-centered. I believe that no two people are the same, so no single approach will work for every client. I am to meet each client where they are at, collaborating with them to create a personalized path towards growth and healing. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Informed CBT, supported by my background in addiction recovery work. I also incorporate elements of Gestalt Therapy, encouraging greater self-awareness and connection between mind, body, and emotions. Equally important, I am passionate about weaving Adlerian social justice into my practice—helping clients connect with community resources, navigate systemic barriers, and move toward lives that align with their goals, values, and strengths, merging both the community and clients’ needs.
